LaSalle police say quite a few drivers are still not getting it when it comes to putting the phones down.
Within a span of two hours last week, LaSalle officers stopped at least six drivers for distracted driving. In all cases, the drivers were using their cell phones.
In Ontario, driving while talking on a handheld device, while texting, or while watching a video on your phone is illegal, even if you're stopped in traffic or at a red light. It is also illegal to have a computer screen readily available if it is not related to driving or navigation.
Fines may begin at $615 for a first offence, or $1,000 if you fight the charge in court and lose. A first offence also includes a three-day licence suspension and three demerit points on your record.
Subsequent fines could reach up to $3,000, along with up to six demerit points, and up to 30 days of licence suspension.
If you must talk on the phone while driving, police recommend using a hands-free device, which is now standard on newer vehicles.
If you must respond to a text while on the road, pull over to a safe place and stop.
The MTO also pointed out that while eating, drinking, smoking, playing with the radio, or reaching for something may not count as distracted driving, a driver may still be cited for careless or dangerous driving.
