Windsor-Essex celebrates Earth Day this weekend

Residents looking for a family-friendly event to celebrate Earth Day have their pick this year with numerous events planned for this weekend.

Amherstburg will host two initiatives on Saturday aimed at improving our environment.

The Map and Grow tree giveaway gets underway at the Libro Credit Union Centre at 9 a.m.

Participants have their pick of native and hardy species, including the Kentucky Coffee Tree, Red Oak, Serviceberry, Red Maple, and Tulip Tree.

Researchers from the University of Windsor will visit participating properties to log where the trees were planted using GPS. Over time, the researchers will track the tree's growth.

Also at 9 a.m., the 100 Trees for a Greener Future Community Tree Planting Event starts at Jack Purdie Park in Amherstburg.

The town's environmental advisory committee will lead a hands-on volunteer initiative to plant 100 trees in the park.

"Earth Day is a powerful reminder that the actions we take today shape the future of our community," said Mayor Michael Prue. "Through initiatives like Map and Grow and our community tree planting, Amherstburg residents are playing a direct role in building a greener, healthier town."

There are two other events on Sunday.

Earth Day Windsor-Essex is a free, family-friendly event at Malden Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Attendees can enjoy a day full of engaging activities, lively entertainment, and hands-on environmental fun.

From 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Sunday, ENWIN will plant 2,200 trees along the Ganatchio Trail in Windsor with the help of volunteers.

More than a thousand volunteers are expected to attend.

Parking is available at Riverside Kiwanis Park/Pump Track parking lot, McHugh Park parking lot, and various public lots along Riverside Drive East.
