The Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA) is around $42,000 closer to getting a new mammography machine.
This funding is coming from the CKHA Foundation's Igniting Healthcare Holiday 50/50 fundraiser, which officially wrapped up last week.
Around $104,000 was raised, with Blenheim's Gail Eastman taking home over $52,000 by winning the 50/50 draw, and $10,000 being split between six others.
The remaining funding will support the hospital's mammography services.
"Demand for mammography has increased significantly in recent years, particularly following provincial changes that lowered the recommended screening age and expanded self-referrals. As a result, the hospital’s current mammography equipment is nearing the end of its service lifecycle," read a statement from the CKHA Foundation.
The new machine the hospital is eyeing would provide real-time, contrast-enhanced imaging. This is expected to give earlier and more accurate diagnoses, reducing the need for follow-up testing in some cases.
