Thousands of dollars lost in Windsor debit card scam

Windsor police say three people lost thousands of dollars in a recent scam involving people posing as delivery drivers.

In each of the three incidents, a young woman approached the victim in a parking lot, saying that she needed help paying for a delivery. The suspect said she had only cash but needed a debit card.

"The suspect then gave the victim cash and asked them to insert their debit card into a mobile payment terminal and enter their PIN," read a release from Windsor police. "After the transaction, the suspect provided the victim with a fraudulent receipt."

Police added that in each case, the suspect switched the victim's real debit card with a similar-looking one while it was in her possession. The card was then used with the victim's PIN to make fraudulent purchases.

The three victims collectively lost about $4,000. Police believe there may be more victims.

"We are urging people to be cautious when approached by strangers in parking lots or other public places," said Windsor Police Sergeant Rob Durling. "If something does not feel right, walk away. Never hand your debit card to another person or share your PIN. When using your card, cover the keypad and always make sure the card returned to you is yours before leaving."

Anyone who may have been victimized, or with information, should call Windsor police's Financial Crimes Unit at (519) 255-6700, extension 4330. Anonymous tips may be submitted to Crime Stoppers at (519) 258-TIPS (8477).
