U.S. Coast Guard rescues three in Lake Erie south of Pelee Island

American Coast Guard officials urge anyone going boating to wear a lifejacket, after three people were rescued Tuesday night south of Pelee Island.

Coast Guard Station Marblehead in Ohio got a report that one person was in the water near Kelleys Island.

They dispatched a response boat, but when coast guard officials arrived, they found two people in the water.

The pair were rescued and taken to dry land before paramedics treated them.

Then the crew found out a third person was still in the water.

A Coast Guard Air Station Detroit MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew flew out and found the person still treading water. With the aircrew's support, Station Marblehead crewmembers pulled him to safety.

"We're just glad to help and save some lives," said Petty Officer 1st Class Ashlyn Schmidt, coxswain, Station Marblehead. "Make sure when you go on the water to wear a lifejacket. It could save your life!"

WindsorNewsToday.ca reached out to Coast Guard Station Marblehead to find out how the three ended up in Lake Erie, but it hasn't yet responded.
