5K run to raise money to CKHA Women & Children's Unit

A new fundraiser in support of the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA) is coming up.

Strong Starts for Tiny Hearts is a 5K Walk, Run, and Stroll set for Sunday, May 31st at Mud Creek Trail in Chatham.

"It's a good way to bring the community together and promote physical activity," said nurse and co-organizer Kristen Fife. "We started circling the idea with some of the staff on the floor, and it started to gain momentum, and here we are."

Nurse and co-organizer Shannon Verschraegen says all the money raised will go to the Women and Children's Unit at the CKHA.

"We're raising money to be able to purchase some new equipment for our floor that's going to help us to facilitate a better birth story and NICU stay for our families," said Verschraegen. "We're looking at some more specialized neonatal equipment that needs some upgrading, some labour and delivery tools, positioning aides, that sort of thing."

Verschraegen added that this cause is very personal.

"A lot of us are moms, a lot of us have had our babies in Chatham, and if we're not moms, then we have little people that we know and love that have been cared for on our floor," said Verschraegen.

The cost to register for the chip-timed event is $25, but anyone who raises over $50 will have the fee waived. For more details and to register, visit tinyurl.com/StrongStarts.
