The U.S. Coast Guard was called in Tuesday afternoon to help two people stranded on the ice on Lake St. Clair.
The two individuals were driving a four-wheeler when they were stranded after the ice broke away from the mainland.
Lieutenant Cristina Silva reports their team arrived by helicopter just after 4 p.m. after receiving a call from Canadian emergency services.
The U.S. Coast Guard sent a pilot, rescue swimmer, and flight mechanic to the rescue.
"We lowered down the swimmer, we have our hoist operator which is our flight mechanic, we sent down the swimmer so that he could assess them and make sure they didn't need any immediate medical attention," said Silva.
The two men were then lifted one at a time into the helicopter.
"They were both in great spirits to see us and so we hoisted them up individually into the helicopter and transported them to Windsor airport," said Silva.
The 61-year-old and 65-year-old were assessed at the airport by Essex-Windsor EMS before they were released.
"I think everyone was happy how that all turned out, and I would say their cold weather gear, being able to stay warm until we got out there and being able to communicate once they realized they were in distress or broken off from an ice flow definitely helped," said Silva.
