25 new names pitched for Owen Sound park

Owen Sound residents are being asked to pick their top three favourites of 25 proposed new names for a local park.

The green space at 823 5th Avenue East, formerly known as Ryerson Park, has been nameless for five years. Following a call for community name suggestions, the city compiled a list of submissions that best met the criteria outlined in the naming and renaming policy for city parks and facilities. That short list is now up for public voting.

Residents can scroll through the list of names and submit their rankings through the city's website. Council will use the results to make a final decision on which name to adopt.

Among the names up for consideration are 8th Street Common, East Ridge Park, Maple Tree Park, Reconciliation Collegiate Park, Northern Star Park, and Friendship Land. Residents have until August 28 to vote.

The city has stated that at least ten days' notice will be given before a final decision on the new name is made.

The park was stripped of its name in 2021 over concerns about its namesake, Egerton Ryerson, who was one of the architects of the residential school system. It is the first space to be considered under the naming and re-naming policy for parks and facilities.
