Owen Sound police shoot dog after officers attacked

An Owen Sound police officer was sent to hospital after being attacked by a dog during a weekend traffic stop in the city.

Police received a call Saturday night about a suspected impaired driver in the area of 16th Street East, who was allegedly driving erratically, hitting curbs and disobeying traffic signals.

The suspect vehicle, a white pickup truck, was stopped on 17th Street East. A roadside sobriety test was administered, which the man driving is said to have failed. While arresting the man, a dog that was in the truck attacked an officer. The officer was bitten multiple times and had to be taken to hospital for treatment.

The dog then charged at another officer in what police called an "aggressive manner" and was shot out of concern for the officer's safety.

A man is charged with impaired driving and driving with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. He is scheduled to appear in Owen Sound court in relation to the charges on April 16.
