Chatham‐Kent (CK) police are warning residents of a recent increase in vehicle thefts.
Police said the rise in thefts involves Toyota and Lexus models in the community.
"Similar incidents have also been reported in neighbouring jurisdictions, suggesting a broader trend across southwestern Ontario," said police.
CK police said they've investigated several Toyota thefts within the municipality since December, including Toyota Tundras, Toyota Highlanders, and Toyota RAV4s, adding that stolen Lexus vehicles are also on the rise.
Police believe the thieves may be using advanced methods to enter the vehicles and start them.
"Investigators have noted that several vehicles were stolen despite being locked and without the successful use of the owner's key fob," police noted.
Toyota or Lexus owners are encouraged to take proactive steps to reduce the risk of theft and assist police in locating their vehicles if a theft occurs.
Police recommend the following safety measures:
• Always ensure that your vehicle is locked when parked
• Park in well‐lit areas or inside a garage when possible
• Install security cameras or motion‐activated lighting around your property
• Add hidden tracking devices to your vehicle
• Consider additional anti‐theft devices or steering wheel locks
Anyone with information about a vehicle theft is asked to contact Chatham‐Kent police at 519‐352‐1234 or Crime Stoppers at 1‐800‐222‐TIPS (8477).
