Another extreme cold warning issued for Chatham-Kent

Environment Canada has issued another extreme cold warning for Chatham-Kent (CK).

It's the fourth cold warning for CK in two weeks.

The national weather agency said extremely cold wind chills near -30 Celcius are expected Friday night into Saturday morning, and again Saturday night into Sunday morning.

Environment Canada noted young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter are at greater risk of frostbite and hypothermia.

Cold-related symptoms include shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.

"Check on older family, friends and neighbours. Keep emergency supplies in your vehicle, such as extra blankets and jumper cables," said Environment Canada. "Outdoor workers should take regularly scheduled breaks to warm up."

To avoid frostbite or hypothermia, dress in layers with gloves and boots, wear a hat, drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration, avoid alcoholic or caffeinated drinks, and limit outdoor activity.

If you suspect frostbite, gently warm the affected skin or immerse in warm water, don’t rub the area, and seek emergency medical treatment for a severe, blistering case of frostbite.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent is urging anyone experiencing homelessness to call the Homeless Response Line anytime at 519-354-6628 for support.

The public is also urged not to leave pets outside for long, because they're also at risk from overexposure to extreme cold temperatures.
