After two years of repairs and some delays, the Wheatley Water Treatment Plant has been fully rehabilitated and is back online.
The Municipality of Chatham-Kent reported on Monday morning that plant operations are now fully back online and the plant is once again supplying safe, high-quality drinking water to residents in Wheatley and Tilbury.
A fire broke out in the generator room at the plant on September 13, 2023 during regular maintenance, significantly damaging the pump, the compressors, and electrical wires. They had to be replaced, along with several other critical plant components that were damaged in the blaze.
“This achievement reflects the dedication and hard work of our staff, contractors, and partners who worked tirelessly to restore the facility and ensure uninterrupted service to the community,” said Karen Burgess, Director of Operations at the Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Commission (CK PUC).
Councillor Lauren Anderson is thanking PUC staff for their diligence and commitment to Wheatley, adding that she's grateful to Leamington for keeping the water flowing during Wheatley's time of need.
"Partnerships like ours are imperative to continuing to provide the needs of our communities," said Anderson. "Finally, to the people of Wheatley and our major water users, your patience and accommodations to requests from the PUC did not go unnoticed, and your support has made all the difference.”
The CK PUC said it remains committed to maintaining reliable water services and safeguarding public health through continuous investment in infrastructure and operational excellence.
