As students head back to school on Tuesday after the summer break, those who attend a Catholic high school in Windsor will move into a new addition.
The Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board (WECDSB) held a celebration on Friday to dedicate the completed expansion to St. Joseph's Catholic High School, which is ready for the first day of school.
Originally, the addition was not scheduled to open until February 2027, the start of the second semester.
WECDSB Chief Executive Officer and Chief Education Officer John Ulicny is thrilled that the expansion is ready early.
"This is exceptional news, especially for a school community like St. Joseph’s, which has experienced some accommodation pressure due to a great deal of growth in the surrounding neighbourhoods in the last few years," said Ulicny, who takes over for the just-retired Emelda Byrne. "So we’re especially grateful to our friends at Sfera Architectural Associates and Alliance General Contracting for delivering this project well ahead of schedule."
The expansion, which will accommodate 184 students, was completed with the help of $4.1-million from the Ontario Ministry of Education.
"This new addition is a tremendous investment in the students and staff of St. Joseph’s Catholic High School, providing much-needed modern learning spaces for a growing school community," said Windsor-Tecumseh MPP Andrew Dowie.
The opening of the St. Joseph's addition is one of three projects completed for the new school year in Windsor-Essex.
According to the Ministry of Education, the Greater Essex County District School Board will unveil completed projects at Glenwood Public School and Roseland Public School.
