The first day of school is still weeks away, but Hotel Dieu Grace Healthcare has advice for parents as the date approaches.
The hospital is highlighting the importance of supporting children as they prepare for a return to the classroom.
Hotel Dieu Grace Healthcare says preparations for the start of school go beyond buying school supplies; it's also an important opportunity to check in on children's mental health and well-being.
"Some kids can't wait to see their friends and teachers again, while others may feel nervous about entering a new classroom, starting at a new school, or adjusting to a new schedule," said Patrick Kolowicz, Director of the Regional Children's Centre. "All of these feelings are completely normal."
The centre is an accredited children's mental health centre that serves as the front door to child and youth mental health services in Windsor-Essex. With the help of partners in the community, it created WEConnectKids, a free program to help children and their families navigate mental health services based on a child's unique needs.
"If a child or youth is experiencing challenges, families don't have to wait until things become overwhelming to seek support," said Lori Kempe, the executive lead for Child and Youth Mental Health and Lead Agency. "There are resources available in our community to help families find the right support for their needs."
Another resource available is ParentLink, providing workshops, educational sessions, and parenting resources on topics like positive parenting, child development, anxiety, resilience, and preparing children for milestones.
"Every child and family deserves to know that support is available," added Kolowicz. "Taking time to check in, listen, and connect with resources can help make the transition to a new school year a positive one."
The Regional Children's Centre can be reached at 519-257-5437 and is open Monday to Thursday 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and on Fridays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
