If you're hoping to apply for the trusted-traveller program, you will have less time to schedule your interview.
The NEXUS program, which provides low-risk passenger vehicle travellers with expedited border crossing and reduces wait times, will return to a pre-pandemic timeframe for applicants to schedule their interviews with border agents.
Effective April 1, 2027, applicants will have just two years to schedule interviews. The window is currently five years, which was needed to address a backlog caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
"After submitting their application, conditionally approved applicants must schedule an interview with both the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) before receiving their NEXUS card," read a release from the CBSA.
The CBSA and CBP jointly operate the program.
Both agencies recommend that those who have applied and are waiting for an interview to book it as soon as possible.
For those who are conditionally-approved after April 1, 2027, you have two years from your approval date to schedule an interview.
If your application is conditionally approved before April 1, you have five years to schedule your interview, or you must schedule it by April 1, 2029, whichevere comes first.
Both the CBSA and CBP portions of the interview are completed at a NEXUS enrolment centre, which are located at the Ambassador Bridge in Detroit, and at the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron.
Applicants will be asked to verify their information, confirm their identity, provide fingerprints, and answer questions from both Canadian and U.S. border agents.
Complete information about the NEXUS program can be found on the official CBSA website, or the official U.S. CBP website.
