Fire causes $50K in damage at Corunna business

Damage is estimated at about $50,000 in a fire in Corunna Wednesday evening.

St. Clair Fire Chief Richard Boyes said the call came in just after 5:45 p.m. to ANJ Industrial Fabricating on Polymoore Drive.

He said an employee in the office could smell smoke in the building and called 911. Three stations and 35 firefighters responded.

"There was roof repairs done during the day, and probably something (equipment, torch) caused something underneath to burn some of the wood, so that was what was burning," said Boyes. "Very minor damage to the roof, but there was some water migration into some of the offices."

Boyes said no injuries were reported in the blaze.

"Due to the quick action of the firefighters they manage to find the fire burning on the roof level and extinguish it," he said. "The cold weather was certainly a factor, it didn't affect the call, but we had some water on the ground that turned to ice. Again, it was a cold night but the firefighters were up to the challenge and put out the fire."

St. Clair Township Fire cleared the scene at around 7:30 p.m.
