As thousands of local government leaders converge on Ottawa for the annual Association of Municipalities of Ontario conference this month, Grey County Warden Andrea Matrosovs is preparing to champion regional priorities on a provincial stage.
Running from August 16 to 19, the high-profile gathering serves as a vital meeting ground where municipal officials collaborate with federal and provincial policymakers to address pressing community challenges and unlock new opportunities.
This year's packed schedule includes Ontario Premier Doug Ford, AMO President Robin Jones, Lieutenant Governor Edith Dumont, and Federation of Canadian Municipalities President Tim Tierney, anchoring discussions around vital themes like resilient infrastructure, municipal finance, local governance, emergency preparedness, Indigenous reconciliation, modernization through artificial intelligence, and regional economic development.
Beyond the broader conference proceedings, Warden Matrosovs and the Grey County delegation are leveraging this direct access to provincial decision-makers through two targeted ministerial delegations. Their first critical meeting is scheduled with the Ministry of Colleges, Universities, Research Excellence and Security to advocate for sustainable financial support for rural-serving higher education institutions like Georgian College in Owen Sound. Functioning as a cornerstone for regional workforce development, the Owen Sound campus drives economic momentum by training specialists in skilled trades, healthcare, clean energy, and marine transportation, making ongoing provincial investment essential for long-term regional prosperity.
In their second scheduled delegation, County representatives will meet with the Ministry of Education to address urgent local pressures within the child care sector under the Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care program. Grey County is pressing the province to authorize additional CWELCC-funded spaces to alleviate severe shortages and expand licensed child care access for families throughout the region. Furthermore, the delegation will urge the Ministry to revise current income thresholds governing fee subsidies, ensuring that hard-working middle-income families earning below the local living wage receive the financial relief they desperately need.
Alongside these core advocacy efforts, Warden Matrosovs will also participate in high-level strategic discussions and events through her involvement with the Western Ontario Wardens Caucus and the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Cities Initiative, reinforcing Grey County's collaborative regional voice at the national capital.
