Going boating? OPP say wear your life jacket

Provincial police are reminding boaters that having a life jacket on board isn't enough to save your life in an emergency situation.

In a public safety message posted to social media on Thursday, West Region OPP Sergeant Ed Sanchuk stressed that personal flotation devices have to be properly fitting and worn at all times while on the water.

"Every summer families and friends head out onto Ontario waters to enjoy the season. Most return home safely, sadly some do not," said Sanchuk. "Too often OPP officers investigate marine fatalities where a life jacket was available but was not being worn when it was needed most."

He added that a sudden fall overboard, changing weather conditions, a collision, or a medical emergency can leave little time to reach for a life jacket stored elsewhere on a boat.

"A life jacket may not prevent an emergency from happening, but it can provide valuable time, improve your chances of survival, and help rescuers locate you more quickly," said Sanchuk. "Never assume experience alone will keep you safe. No one leaves the dock expecting an emergency."

According to OPP, nearly 80 per cent of all boating deaths officers investigated in 2025 involved people who were not wearing a life jacket. Additionally, adult men accounted for almost 90 per cent of all boating fatalities on OPP patrolled waters last year.

"This summer make the choice to wear the equipment designed to save your life. Don't just bring your life jacket, wear it," added Sanchuk.
