Grand Bend Bridge project nearing completion

The mayor of Lambton Shores says the second phase of the Ontario Street Grand Bend Bridge project is expected to be completed by the last week of June.

Doug Cook said while there were some weather-related delays, construction crews worked throughout the winter months.

"They're working on the west side of the bridge. They're taking off what would be the old sidewalk and replacing it with wider sidewalks and redoing the two lanes on the west side," Cook said.

He said the project also involves water and sewer infrastructure.

"The bridge has been moving along very well. The contractor, McLean Taylor Construction, has been great to work with, they're very contentious of having their timelines in place," Cook said. "July 1 is game on for Grand Bend and tourist area so we definitely have to have all five lanes open and available."

While the goal is to have all bridge lanes open in time for this summer, Cook said the final layer of asphalt will not be applied until September.

The $7.6 million project began in 2024. The project's first phase was completed ahead of schedule, in May 2025, and phase two began a few months later.

Cook said the area underneath the bridge will likely remain closed to boat traffic until the beginning of May for safety reasons.

A livestream of the bridge construction can be viewed on the municipality's website.
