UPDATE; High waters impact Hanover Walkerton landfill

Flooding forced the closure of the Hanover/Walkerton Landfill Site on Saturday due to elevated water levels.

"The roadway into the site is currently flooded. As a result, the landfill is temporarily closed, but it is expected to reopen as scheduled on Tuesday," said CAO Sherri Walden. "Despite the access issue, all materials stored at the landfill, including scrap metal and appliances, remain secured, and there are no environmental impacts from the site."

"There has been no release of waste or contaminants from the landfill, and downstream areas are not experiencing environmental impacts related to landfill operations," Walden added. "Staff continue to monitor conditions to ensure ongoing environmental protection."

Meanwhile, pictures of the swollen river downstream show scattered appliances in the flood waters. The Town of Hanover reported the items are not from the landfill, but from a private property.

A view from County Road 4, from the west side of the bridge on the west side of Hanover, shows fridges, stoves, and a big freezer in the water.
