Grey Bruce OPP Polar Plunge and charity hockey game raise over $10K for Special Olympics Ontario

The Township of Georgian Bluffs hosted the second annual Grey Bruce OPP Polar Plunge on Saturday, March 7, bringing the community together in support of Special Olympics Ontario. The event featured collaboration between the Grey Bruce Ontario Provincial Police, Inter Township Fire Department, Grey Bruce Paramedic Services, and Special Olympics Ontario – Owen Sound.

The Polar Plunge is a yearly fundraiser in which participants gather pledges before taking a daring jump into icy waters. Last year, the event raised roughly $4,000. This year, thanks to more than 150 donors, over $10,000 was collected. More than 20 courageous plungers took part, including Special Olympics athletes, with some even braving the waters twice.

Funds raised help sustain both local and provincial Special Olympics Ontario programs, providing athletic opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities.

The day began with Owen Both, a local Special Olympics athlete, performing the Canadian National Anthem. Following the performance, the Grey Bruce OPP faced off against the Inter Township Fire Department in a friendly hockey game, with the OPP claiming victory. Prior to the plunge, Owen Both led the crowd in reciting the Special Olympics Oath: “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”

Attendees enjoyed free hot drinks provided by the Shallow Lake Minor Hockey League Canteen, with small prizes awarded to guests who brought their own mugs to reduce waste. Plungers also had the opportunity to select their own walk-up songs, adding a fun, personalized touch to the icy challenge.

This year’s top individual fundraiser was Aimee Gilchrist, who raised more than $1,800. The Ice Queens emerged as the leading fundraising team, bringing in over $3,000, with team member Diana Meder contributing $1,600 on her own.

Special recognition was given to Jim Elliott from Northern Leisure in Port Elgin, who provided a sauna for plungers to warm up after the icy dip. The Inter Township Fire Department also offered a dive team, remaining in the freezing tank to ensure everyone’s safety. Grey Bruce OPP Officer Kody Lyons led the event alongside OPP Sergeant Krista Linthorne, who launched the initiative last year. Dennis Both served as the Special Olympics Coordinator, bringing together community partners, athletes, and donors.

The Township of Georgian Bluffs extends gratitude to all participants, volunteers, sponsors, and community members who contributed to making the event a success. The community looks forward to welcoming everyone back next year.
