Work to shore up Thames riverbank completed

Improved infrastructure, a more stable shoreline, and new accessible pathway are now part of Chatham's downtown waterfront.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent (CK) unveiled the completed Thames River Slope Stabilization Project on Monday.

The project began in the summer of 2025 and focused on the section of the Thames River between the Third Street Bridge and Fifth Street Bridge, where years of erosion and aging infrastructure had raised concerns about the long-term stability of the riverbank. Crews worked to replace the old retaining wall, improve stormwater infrastructure, and regrade and reinforce the riverbanks.

According to the municipality, the new retaining wall is about half a metre taller than the previous one, which should provide additional protection during periods of high water. The flatter riverbank slope was also reinforced with quarried rock and native plants, which is intended to restore the shoreline and improve long-term stability.

"This project is about protecting our community today while planning for the future," said Mayor Darrin Canniff. "The Thames River is an important part of Chatham's identity, and this investment ensures our downtown waterfront remains safe, accessible, and enjoyable for generations to come. It's also another step toward creating a more vibrant and connected downtown that residents can take pride in."

The project was a long-term investment made by CK council and the municipality, with about 40 per cent of the costs provided by the Government of Canada’s Disaster Mitigation and Adaptation Fund.
