Chatham couple reaches moving milestone to help CK Hospice

A heartbreaking situation at Chatham-Kent (CK) Hospice has turned into a beautiful and heartwarming story.

Nestor Kirenko and his wife Willi, who is spending her final days at the hospice after being diagnosed with cancer, have reached their goal of raising $100,000 for CK Hospice in just six days.

Hospice officials noted “Willi’s Match” is an "extraordinary example" of community generosity, adding the donations will be doubled to a combined total of $200,000.

Willi and Nestor Kirenko made the matching-gift commitment last week to encourage the community to support compassionate end-of-life care at CK Hospice.

Willi thanks everyone who made a donation or shared kind words or stories about her relationship with Nestor.

"It's incredible the outpouring of generosity and love and beautiful notes regarding what hospice has done for others as well," said Willi.

Willi and Nestor are now encouraging community members to carry the momentum forward by making a donation to purchase three new cuddle beds for hospice residents and their loved ones.

"I've been using this cuddle bed daily to connect with my loved ones. Everyone takes turns hopping into bed with me. We have these wonderful, close conversations, were able to hold each other," she added.

Ironically, Willi is now experiencing the care she once provided to others.

She was a registered nurse and nurse practitioner for more than 45 years and spent nine years providing end-of-life care before being diagnosed with cancer that has progressed rapidly.

CK Hospice said we can honour Willi’s Legacy by bringing comfort, connection, and compassion to residents and the people who love them.
