Electrical issue caused $1M blaze at Mike's Place in Chatham

An investigation has concluded the fire at Mike's Place in Chatham was caused by an electrical issue.

Chatham-Kent police, the Ontario Fire Marshal, and Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue added there's no evidence of criminal activity following the $1 million blaze at the popular restaurant and bar on Queen Street early Tuesday morning.

Mike's Place owner Brenda Buckler previously said the fire started in the bar area.

No injuries were reported.

"The Chatham-Kent Police Service extends its appreciation to the members of Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue, Emergency Services, the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office, and all responding emergency personnel for their efforts throughout the incident and investigation," said police. "We also wish to express our sincere support to the owners, staff, and everyone affected by this fire. Mike’s Place has been a valued part of the community and we wish all those impacted the very best as they move forward with recovery and rebuilding efforts."

The restaurant has been a staple in Chatham for 48 years.
