Doctor wins prestigious family medicine award

Dr. Alexandra Ferrara has won the prestigious Leonora Sheppard Award in Family Medicine from the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.

It recognizes a Family Medicine Resident who demonstrates outstanding clinical excellence and comes with $24,000.

The award is given to a resident who is committed to providing comprehensive community Family Medicine and who plans to build their medical practice in Ontario following the completion of their residency program.

Dr. Ferrara was born and raised in Chatham. She earned her Bachelor of Science from Western University and a Master of Public Health from Brock University before completing her medical degree at the University of Limerick.

"I am incredibly thankful to receive the Leonora Sheppard Award," said Dr. Ferrara. "Being recognized for my commitment to comprehensive community Family Medicine is an absolute honour. I am truly excited to continue practicing in Ontario and look forward to supporting the health and well-being of our communities as I transition into my full-time practice."

She plans to open her own Family Medicine practice in Chatham-Kent.

"We are incredibly proud of Dr. Ferrara for earning this meaningful recognition." said Dr. Lindsey Sutherland, Chatham-Kent Regional Academic Director, Distributed Education at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. "She is highly deserving of this award, and her passion for supporting local health care makes her an exceptional asset to our community and the broader provincial health care system as a whole."
