Speed limit to be raised on remaining section of Hwy. 401 in CK

The speed limit on the remainder of Highway 401 across Chatham-Kent (CK) will be increased at the end of August.

The province announced on Wednesday that the speed limit on Highway 401 from Merlin Road in CK to Highway 427 near the airport in Toronto will be increased from 100 kilometres per hour to 110km/h on August 31.

The province said speed limits of 110 km/hr will be in place on 89 per cent of provincial highways by the end of September 2026, approximately doubling the 873 kilometres of provincial highways already posted at 110 km/h.

The change builds on the increased speeds on Highway 401 from Windsor to Tilbury announced in 2022 and the 2024 announcement extending the higher speed on Highway 401 from Tilbury further east by seven kilometres.

The province noted that the higher speed limits will not only help move more than $380 million worth of goods along Highway 401 faster every day, they will save commuters time.

“Under the leadership of Premier Ford, our government is helping get drivers where they’re going faster and safely,” said Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transportation. “We’re going to keep supporting commuters, workers and businesses by investing in our $31 billion plan to build and expand roads and highways, so we can get people and goods moving across Ontario and keep workers on the job.”

According to the province, speed limit increases are only implemented on highways that have been designed and engineered to safely accommodate higher speeds, following rigorous technical reviews and any necessary infrastructure improvements.
