Canada's first-ever win in the FIFA World Cup was a massive one, as Team Canada destroyed Qatar 6-0 before a partisan crowd at BC Place.
Jonathan David scored three times for Canada, in the 29th minute, and in extra time at the conclusion of the first half.
Cyle Larin, who scored the only Canadian goal against Bosnia-Herzegovina in the first game of the tournament's round-robin portion, opened the scoring in the 12th minute.
The second half featured a goal in the 64th minute by Nathan Saliba. The fifth Canadian goal came at the 75th minute when Qatar's Mohamed Manai scored in his own net.
David completed his hat trick during extra-time of the second half.
Qatar only shot twice at Canada's goal, with goaltender Maxime Crepeau turning away both.
As of Thursday night, Canada and Switzerland are tied atop the Group B standings with four points apiece. They are set to play each other on Wednesday, June 24, in Vancouver.
Canada has appeared in two previous World Cups, in 1986 in Mexico, and in 2022 in Qatar. Each time, Canada had an 0-3 record and did not advance to the knockout round.
