A spill at the wastewater treatment lagoon in Blenheim is being resolved by the Municipality of Chatham.
On Thursday, the municipality reported a spill was identified within the Blenheim Wastewater Treatment Lagoon System, but the spill isn't impacting groundwater or putting public safety at risk.
"The spill has been contained within the wastewater treatment lagoon system and immediate steps are underway to contain, remove, and correct the issue," said municipal officials. "The discharge location has been identified and immediate action is being taken to address the spill."
The Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Commission is working with environmental consultants and the Ontario Ministry of the Environment to ensure the appropriate cleanup and corrective actions are completed, noted the municipality.
A wastewater treatment lagoon is a large outdoor treatment system where wastewater is cleaned using natural processes including sunlight, air, and helpful microorganisms before it is safely released back into the environment.
The municipality said it will continue to provide updates as additional information becomes available.
