The Chatham-Kent (CK) community donated over 1,000 packages of menstrual hygiene products and $3,000 during United Way's Period Promise Campaign.
"We wanted to turn a critical issue into a loud, energetic celebration of community giving, and CK absolutely delivered," said CEO of United Way Windsor-Essex (WE) CK Lorraine Goddard.
To celebrate the success, United Way WE CK hosted its first Period Promise Social Celebration at The Match Eatery & Public House on Monday.
The event, attended by residents, businesses, labour unions, and community groups, focused on breaking the stigma around period poverty and normalizing the discussion about menstrual equity.
"Period products are among the most requested but least donated items at local food banks and shelters. The incredible enthusiasm from our partners proves our community is ready to break the stigma and ensure everyone has access to basic hygiene and dignity," Goddard continued.
United Way attributes the success of the one-month campaign to collection drives and local business point-of-sale fundraisers.
United Way added that although the campaign is finished, the need is year-round. Everything collected will be donated to front-line services throughout CK.
