Dresden landfill meeting scheduled to update public

Residents are invited to a public information meeting on the proposed York1 waste and landfill project in Dresden.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent (CK) said the meeting will take place on Wednesday, June 24, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Ken Houston Agricultural Centre, located at 1212 North Street in Dresden.

Municipal officials noted the meeting is a chance for the public to get updated about ongoing municipal efforts to advocate on behalf of the community to push back against the proposed project.

"While there have not been any major developments, the Municipality is committed to maintaining open communication with the community about this issue," said officials. "This in-person meeting will provide residents with an update on the actions that the Municipality of Chatham-Kent is undertaking in the fight for Dresden and Chatham-Kent, the ongoing advocacy efforts with provincial officials, and the limited information that has been received to date from York1 regarding its proposed project."

The municipality noted there won't be an open-mic question period during the meeting due to the highly technical nature of the project and the complexity of the information involved.

Residents are encouraged to submit questions ahead of time instead through Let’s Talk Chatham-Kent. Questions will then be read and answered at the meeting, said the municipality, adding that approach will allow staff adequate time to research and prepare more detailed responses.

Click here to submit questions until June 19.

The municipality noted it will make every effort to answer all questions submitted by residents and staff will be available to speak with residents one-on-one following the formal presentation.

Council and the community remain opposed to the York1 proposal, largely because of various environmental concerns.

A court hearing over the Dresden landfill between the Municipality of Chatham-Kent and York1 Environmental Waste Solutions has been scheduled for September 21 in Chatham court.

York1 argues that the property at 29831 Irish School Road in Dresden doesn't require any land-use planning approvals from CK council, citing it should be exempt since the property was previously used as a dump.

The municipality disagrees, arguing that York1 does require municipal land-use planning approvals, including zoning and official plan changes.
