Next CK council could get a raise

A Citizen Review Committee is recommending a pay raise for Chatham-Kent council.

A report going to council on Monday night proposes a pay raise of $1,840 per year for the next term of council, beginning on January 1, 2027.

The recommendation also includes an increase in healthcare spending for each councillor to $1,420 per year and implementing a meal allowance for councillors when they are travelling to conduct business on behalf of the municipality.

The meal allowance would be $15 for breakfast, $25 for lunch, and $40 for dinner. However, a council member could still submit a detailed claim if they encounter situations in which the meal allowance can't meet the expense.

A new $3,500 councillor training fund is also proposed.

The Citizen Review Committee reviews council remuneration every third year of the council term to ensure that compensation remains competitive and comparable.

The mayor currently earns $132,632 per year, and councillors earn $41,921 per year.
