Water levels believed to have peaked in Chatham area

Water levels aren't expected to rise anymore on the Thames River in the Chatham area.

The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTVCA) believes the levels have peaked in the city and nearby communities.

The area saw between 40 and 50 mm of rain over a two-day period, causing some flooding on roads and sidewalks near the river.

The rain also caused some flooding issues on Chatham streets as catch basins struggled to keep up with the heavy flow of water. This issue wasn't caused by a sewer issue, as the city's system is designed to drain a certain amount of water in order to prevent it from being overworked.

The LTVCA believes the river's water levels will remain high for a couple of days. During this time, the public is asked to stay away from the river as the high levels and fast current can create a very dangerous situation.
