Chatham man pleads guilty to attempted murder, gets jail time

A Chatham man charged with attempted murder has been sentenced to eight years behind bars.

Clinton Willder, 29, was sentenced in Chatham Court on Wednesday, but avoided paying almost $200,000 in restitution requested by the insurance company after a deliberately set fire at an apartment on Park Street in Chatham in March 2024.

A tenant with life-threatening injuries was found unconscious and severely beaten inside the burning apartment and had to be moved to safety by Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue Services.

Willder pleaded guilty to attempted murder in court on Wednesday and was handed a lifetime weapons ban and ordered to provide a DNA sample.

The arson charges and break and enter charges were withdrawn.
